COVID-19: #2

This post is for babies who are exclusively formula fed. It’s an extension of my Instagram post from 3/19/20. For exclusively breastfed babies, go here.

Powdered Infant Formula

Facts

  • Babies who are formula fed are at ⁣higher risk for becoming ill from viruses and bacteria than breastfed babies. ⁣

  • Because infant formula lacks immune factors, it is even more important to follow preparation guidelines in order to keep your baby safe. ⁣

  • Cronobacter Sakazakii is a bacteria commonly found in powdered infant formula (4-20% of tested cans from 2006-2016).⁣

  • Adding too much water to the powder (or not enough powder to water) can result in water intoxication (hyponatremic shock) which can lead to brain swelling, lethargy, poor feeding, seizures, and even death.⁣

  • All water should be boiled to mix formula. ⁣

Mixing

  • The World Health Organization's instructions for preparation of powdered infant formula is very specific.⁣

  • BOIL water (bottled and filtered water, too! Do not let water sit more than 30 min after boiling.

  • Measure correct amount of water then add powder.

    • Powdered formula needs to be heated enough (at least 70deg C/185deg F) to kill bacteria. This is for all formula preparation, not just during our current pandemic.

    • Adding powdered formula to freshly boiled water kills bacteria that may be present in the powder.

  • During times of scarcity (Covid-19), it is important to remember to continue mixing formula as directed. ⁣

If you are having trouble finding enough infant formula for your baby, call your doctor, WIC, and local support groups. Unused, unopened cans are out there! You may also be able to find donor breast milk for your baby.⁣

Lastly,⁣
Please buy formula responsibly. Do not buy more than you need for a few days. One person buying 5 cans may mean someone else’s baby gets zero cans. We are in this together. ⁣
