Raise your hand if you’ve ever heard “nipple pain is normal.” IT. IS. NOT. TRUE. If you’re experiencing a painful latch, something needs to change. Seek help.
While nipple pain is common, it is not normal. You don’t need to “toughen up” your nipples. While this was standard practice for the Boomer generation, I’ve never heard anyone sing the praises of rubbing a wash cloth across your nipples during pregnancy. It’s unnecessary and may even be harmful.
If you have consistent, persistent nipple pain, contact your IBCLC. You don’t need to suffer through breastfeeding.
Pregnant and worried about possible nipple pain? Find a local breastfeeding group and an IBCLC before you have your baby. Schedule a prenatal consult. You will learn so much, including how to avoid nipple pain!
I would like to add that I was a little IBCLC baby not so long ago and my Boomer mentors are some of the greatest IBCLCs I know! This is meme not meant for you guys :D
